LONDON: More than 70 Labour MPs, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, have formally demanded the resignation of UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer following the Labour Party’s poor performance in recent local elections.

According to British media reports, senior cabinet members arrived at the Prime Minister’s residence to press their demands, urging Starmer to step aside and allow new leadership to take charge.

The pressure on Starmer is mounting after the party suffered heavy losses in council elections, prompting five parliamentary secretaries, including Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s aide Joe Morris and Environment Secretary Tom Rutland’s parliamentary private secretary, to resign from their posts.

MP Afzal Khan highlighted the drop in Labour’s popularity among the public, noting that the party lost a significant number of seats in local government elections.

Shabana Mahmood, a British-Pakistani MP and Home Secretary, has advised the Prime Minister to set a clear timeline for resignation. Two other senior cabinet members have also recommended the same course of action.

The calls for resignation are expected to be formally discussed during the upcoming cabinet meeting, with senior MPs pushing for a transition to new leadership following Labour’s historic local election defeat.
