ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a significant change in the issuance process of Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs), making signatures optional for first-time applicants.

As per sources, this initiative has been undertaken in order to help out citizens especially the illiterates and those who cannot offer signatures. Under this newly adopted system, for those applicants who cannot offer signatures, “N/A” would be written against the signatures column in the ID Card of theirs.

In this regard, National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has made a statement that this step has been taken to make the ID registration process easier and to avoid any problem for vulnerable sections of society.

Furthermore, sources also added that there would not be any thumbprint image in the process of verification or printing since it might be misused. Citizens have also been warned not to send any thumbprint images along with their applications whether from mobile or online applications.

In addition, NADRA said in its statement that in order to inform illiterate people and those unable to sign their documents, an awareness campaign has also been started.

The authority added that the revised system is designed to improve efficiency, enhance data protection, and reduce the risk of identity-related fraud while maintaining ease of access for applicants.

The new policy will apply to individuals applying for CNICs for the first time across Pakistan.
