PESHAWAR: Today, the world marks International Workers’ Day, celebrating the achievements and sacrifices of workers globally. However, for many labourers, while the day is celebrated, the reality of their everyday struggles remains far from the joy and recognition this day signifies.

International Workers’ Day, known as Labour Day in many countries, is a period dedicated to bringing attention to workers and their contributions to society. Unfortunately, for many workers, who continue to experience numerous challenges such as poverty, hazardous working environments, and poor health coverage, the observance of this day comes amid hard times.

Struggles of Workers

While workers receive recognition, they still suffer many hardships. In Pakistan, according to labour union representatives, millions of workers, particularly in the private sector, still live in miserable conditions. For instance, many workers lack basic health care and social protection as well as fail to earn the minimum wage.

“The celebration of International Labour Day serves as a reminder that we keep suffering the same old problems even though there have been many sacrifices made,” said a top labour union representative.

Historical Importance

International Workers’ Day can be traced back to 1886 in Chicago, where the workers revolted against the exploitative nature of capitalists. The revolt was marked by violent incidents, where the police resorted to firing at the demonstrators, resulting in many deaths and injuries. The day serves as a commemoration to remember the sacrifices made by workers for the sake of their rights.

Labour Day in Pakistan

Although Labour Day has been celebrated since 1973, initiated under Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s government in Pakistan, there still remains much distance between the labourers and their rights. The labour unions have demanded effective implementation of minimum wages, social security, and improved healthcare facilities for workers.

The increasing gap between the day and its celebrations has resulted in disappointment among labour leaders who assert that without any actual change in the lives of the workers, the day will serve no purpose.
