QUETTA: A controversial narrative has emerged following the suicide bombing near the Chaman Gate area of Quetta, with competing claims about the identity and background of the attacker and renewed debate over missing persons allegations.

According to local media reports, the banned outfit Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack and allegedly identified the suspected suicide bomber as Bilal Shahwani. These claims have not been independently verified by authorities.

In the aftermath of the incident, some media commentary and opinion pieces have alleged that Shahwani was previously linked to missing persons campaigns, during which activists and civil society groups had accused authorities of his enforced disappearance. Those claims were widely reported at the time but remain disputed.

The latest attack reportedly involved a vehicle-borne explosive device near a railway-linked checkpoint, resulting in multiple casualties, including civilians. Officials have stated that women, children, and elderly individuals were among those killed, while dozens more were injured. An official investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and confirm identities.

The incident has reignited tensions between state institutions, human rights activists, and separatist narratives, with each side presenting sharply different interpretations of Shahwani’s background and the broader conflict in the region.

Authorities have urged caution against premature conclusions until forensic and investigative evidence is completed.
