The American magazine ‘The Diplomat’ has said in its latest article that the US should openly support Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to blacklist the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Majeed Brigade in the UN Security Council.
According to the journal, BLA and Majeed Brigade are no longer local groups but have become a constant threat to regional security from safe havens in Afghanistan. These organizations are constantly targeting CPEC projects, Chinese citizens, and Pakistani targets, and the reach of their operations could create wider threats in the future.
The Diplomat wrote that Pakistan and China had approached the UN to isolate BLA diplomatically and financially at the global level. The UN designation could have frozen the BLA’s assets and imposed global travel restrictions, which could have limited its financial resources and global network.
The article questioned whether the US itself has declared the BLA and the Majeed Brigade as terrorists, then opposing or blocking a resolution at the UN is a contradictory behaviour. The journal warned that blocking the BLA’s blacklist designation could affect Pakistan-US counterterrorism cooperation.
According to The Diplomat, “upsetting a key security partner like Pakistan could prove costly for the US,” especially when the US has also shown interest in Balochistan’s mineral reserves. In the future, US investments and personnel could also be exposed to potential threats from the BLA.
The journal said that terrorist safe havens in Afghanistan are a constant threat to regional peace. The BLA now has the potential to create regional instability, and relying solely on unilateral action would limit the global resources available against it.
The Diplomat stressed that a balanced and effective international response is needed against the BLA. This obstacle is certainly a diplomatic challenge for Pakistan and China, but efforts are likely to continue. The US blocking of the resolution is not just a technical matter, but part of a complex geopolitical balance, and future US actions will determine how this decision impacts the global fight against groups like the BLA.
