ANKARA: US President Donald Trump has said that further attacks on Iran could take place tonight, claiming that Tehran’s actions had ended any possibility of continuing a ceasefire arrangement.

Speaking to the media in Ankara during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was over and described any further deal with Tehran as a “waste of time.”

Trump alleged that Iran had carried out attacks using drones and rockets against naval vessels, accusing Tehran of continuing what he described as decades-long hostile behaviour in the region.

He said his objective was not regime change in Iran but preventing the country from obtaining nuclear weapons. He claimed that Iran’s leadership had already been significantly weakened.

Trump further claimed that Iran had been destabilizing the Middle East for 47 years and said Tehran would no longer be able to threaten countries in the region.

He also claimed that Iran’s military capabilities, including its air force and navy, had been severely damaged, and accused Tehran of repeatedly violating agreements.

US launches air strikes on Iran, says Central Command

Yesterday, the United States has launched a series of air strikes against Iran, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said, describing the operation as a response to what it called Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in international waters.

According to CENTCOM, the strikes were carried out after Iran allegedly targeted three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, endangering the lives of civilian crews.

The US military said the attacks on the vessels were “unprovoked” and “dangerous”, and described them as a clear violation of the ceasefire.

US officials said the military action is intended to impose significant costs on Iran for what Washington described as attacks that threatened the safety and security of international commercial shipping.
