ISLAMABAD: A significant increase in khula and maintenance cases has been recorded in the family courts of Islamabad, placing growing pressure on the judicial system.
It is reported that more than 300 family cases including those involving khula, maintenance and divorce cases are filed on a daily basis in the family courts of Islamabad.
Sources revealed that 38 khula and maintenance cases are being registered per hour in Islamabad and the number of total khula cases so far this year exceeds 45,000.
The officials further stated that the number of more than 9,000 cases registered every month is a burden for the judiciary, making it difficult to dispose of cases on time and increasing delays for concerned parties.
Legal experts associated this increase in family cases due to deteriorating economic situation, unemployment, domestic violence, intolerance, mental stress and addiction to drugs.
Experts believe that the prevailing economic conditions and increasing cost of living make the family structure under stress which ultimately leads to differences between spouses and khulas.
It was observed by legal practitioners that in most of the cases, family courts try to reconcile both the parties, but sometimes it happens that the issue goes beyond the scope where it becomes very difficult to continue with the marriage.
According to some social analysts, the increasing number of cases related to Khula and divorce is very alarming for the family structure in general, and there is a great necessity to make social institutions stronger.
It was predicted that unless proper attention is paid to the economic and social problems, such serious problems may arise in the future.
