GILGIT: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Advocate Amjad Hussain has been elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, officials confirmed on Monday.
The announcement was made during a session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly presided over by Speaker Imran Nadeem. Officials said no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the chief minister’s post, and all members present in the House extended their support to Amjad Hussain.
With this development, Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. The schedule for his oath-taking ceremony will be announced later.
Amjad Hussain, who won the recent election from constituency GBA-1 Gilgit, also serves as the PPP’s provincial president in Gilgit-Baltistan. He previously remained a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council from 2010 to 2015 and had also secured victory from two constituencies in the 2020 elections.
G-B Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker Elected Unopposed
Meanwhile, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly have been elected unopposed, marking a smooth transition in the newly constituted provincial legislature.
Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, while Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman secured the position of Deputy Speaker without contest.
The oath of office was administered by the outgoing Speaker Nazir Advocate to the new Speaker Imran Nadeem, who then administered the oath of office to the Deputy Speaker, Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman.
Sources claim that PPP has also held consultations with different stakeholders from political fronts to gain their support against nomination in the chief ministerial post.
There are also indications that the PPP is moving towards forming a coalition government in Gilgit-Baltistan, with reports suggesting that the Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party may become part of the governing alliance.
