KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait has gone to an extreme by removing citizenship from 1,266 people in the context of the nation’s continuous efforts to ensure adherence to the existing nationality laws. This move, which extends even to the relatives of the affected persons, has been undertaken based on directives from the Amir of Kuwait. In total, there are six decrees (numbers 60, 61, 62, 65, 66, and 67), that were published in Kuwait’s official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm on April 26, 2026, with the effect of the decree kicking in April 25, 2026.
As many as 1,242 individuals and their family members have lost their citizenship on the basis of Decree No. 60, while others have lost theirs on account of Decree Nos. 61, 62, 66, and 67, whereby citizenship is revoked from one person and their dependants in each case. Decree No. 65 has resulted in the revocation of citizenship from 20 people who obtained their Kuwaiti citizenship fraudulently, in contravention of Article 21(A) of the Kuwaiti Nationality Act.
