Pakistan star batter Babar Azam has emerged as a leading contender to take over the Test captaincy, with sources saying his name is being seriously considered alongside current skipper Shan Masood.

According to sources, a number of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials support Babar’s return as Test captain, believing he is the right choice to lead the team in the upcoming overseas assignments.

However, some board members are in favour of retaining Shan Masood, arguing that he should be given another opportunity to lead the side through the England tour before any leadership change is made.

The final decision on the Test captaincy will be made by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is expected to announce the captain and the squad after returning to Pakistan.

The Pakistan Test squad is likely to be unveiled on Monday or Tuesday. The selected 16-member squad will then assemble in Islamabad on July 8 for a short training camp before departing for the West Indies on either July 13 or 14.

Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies will begin with a four-day warm-up match starting on July 18, followed by a two-Test series in Trinidad and Tobago. The first Test is scheduled for July 25–29, while the second will be played from August 2–6.

After completing the Caribbean tour, Pakistan will travel to England for a three-match Test series.

The first Test will be held at Headingley in Leeds from August 19, followed by the second at Lord’s from August 27, with the final Test taking place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9.
