PESHAWAR: A detainee accused in a case involving the desecration of graves was killed after unidentified armed men opened fire on a police team in Peshawar’s Badhaber area, according to Capital City Police Peshawar.
Police said the team from Badhaber Police Station was taking the suspect, identified as Salman, an Afghan citizen, to the Sheikhān cemetery for crime-scene identification when six unidentified armed men riding three motorcycles suddenly attacked the team.
The attackers opened fire on the police party, damaging the official vehicle as well as the bulletproof jacket and helmet of one police officer, according to police.
The detainee was seriously wounded in the firing. He was being taken to a hospital for medical treatment when he succumbed to his injuries on the way, police said.
The attackers fled the scene after the shooting.
Police said Salman had been arrested a day earlier while allegedly attempting to desecrate a grave at the Sheikhān cemetery. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to desecrating 10 graves, according to the police statement.
A search operation is underway to identify and arrest the suspects involved in the attack, police said.
