ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), has issued a landslide alert for northern parts of Pakistan from June 16 to June 22, warning of increased risks due to forecast heavy rainfall.
According to the advisory, landslides, rockfalls, and debris flows are likely in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Key transportation routes, including the Karakoram Highway, may face disruptions due to landslides and falling debris.
Areas identified as particularly vulnerable include Jaglot, Skardu, Shigar, Hussainabad, Muzaffarabad, Kel, Sharda, Lower Chitral, Lower Kohistan, Abbottabad, and Lora Gali.
The NEOC has also issued a separate flood alert for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, and Balochistan from June 16 to June 19, warning of possible flash floods and urban flooding triggered by widespread rainfall.
In Punjab, heavy rains may cause flooding in streams and nullahs across Murree, Galiyat, and adjoining hilly areas, while urban flooding and waterlogging are also feared in low-lying localities.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sudden surges in rivers, seasonal streams, and rain-fed waterways are expected. Flash flood risks have been highlighted along the Gomal River in southern districts, while flood-like conditions may develop near the Kurram and Tochi rivers in Lakki Marwat. Low-lying areas of Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Lakki Marwat are also at risk of inundation.
The NDMA warned of potential flooding in Swat, Chitral, Shangla, Mingora, Upper Dir, Upper and Lower Kohistan, Battagram, and Mansehra due to intense rainfall.
In Azad Kashmir, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Rawalakot may experience flash floods and localized flooding.
Meanwhile, districts including Ghizer, Gupis-Yasin, Diamer, Skardu, Darel, Tangir, and Gilgit in Gilgit-Baltistan are also vulnerable to sudden flood situations.
In northeastern Balochistan, heavy rainfall may trigger localized flooding and flash floods in Zhob, Musakhel, Barkhan, Loralai, Dukki, Sherani, and Sibi districts.
Water levels in the Zhob and Nari rivers and associated streams are expected to rise significantly.
The NDMA has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas during periods of heavy rainfall and urged tourists to check weather forecasts and road conditions before visiting northern regions.
Relevant provincial and district authorities have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for any emergency situation.
The public has also been encouraged to stay updated through the official “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application.
