Instagram has expanded its algorithm personalisation feature, giving users greater control over the type of content they see on the photo-sharing app.
The new update is aimed at making content recommendations more relevant to users’ interests by allowing them to customize topics appearing in their main feed.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the change is designed to improve the overall user experience on the platform.
However, the update does not necessarily increase the visibility of posts from accounts users already follow.
Instead, the feature works around interest-based topics, requiring users to select or enter terms related to the kind of content they want to see more often.
Mosseri acknowledged that many users frequently complain that their posts do not reach enough followers.
He explained that while following accounts helps improve the user experience, recommendation systems often dominate the main feed, reducing the visibility of posts from followed accounts.
According to Mosseri, Instagram is therefore continuing to provide a dedicated Following Feed where users can specifically view posts from accounts they follow.
