WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that Pakistan is playing an important and admirable role in efforts aimed at securing a possible peace agreement with Iran, adding that the signing of the deal is expected soon.

Speaking to the media, Trump said documents related to the proposed agreement with Iran had entered the final stages and would soon be formally concluded.

He added that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened within a week after the agreement is finalized.

Meanwhile, the US president also announced the postponement of military strikes and bombing operations against Iran that were reportedly scheduled for tonight.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed high-level talks with the Iranian leadership.

According to Trump, all key parties involved  including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt have agreed on the core points of the proposed deal.

He said the venue and timing for the signing ceremony would be announced soon, but noted that the US naval blockade would remain in place until the agreement is officially completed.

Earlier, Trump had stated that Washington was preparing for strong military action against Iran. He claimed that Iran’s naval and air capabilities, radar systems and air defence installations had already suffered significant damage.

Trump further claimed that the United States could soon take control of Iran’s Kharg Island and other major oil infrastructure points, while plans were also being considered to influence Iranian oil and gas markets.

According to him, the same model previously applied in Venezuela’s energy sector could be implemented in Iran.
