BANNU: An Elite Force police constable was martyred on Sunday after unknown armed men opened fire in Daud Shah area of Bannu, police officials said.

According to sources, the incident took place in Peepal Bazaar when unidentified assailants targeted Elite Force constable Ahmadullah, son of Sheroon and resident of Mamash Khel.

He sustained critical gunshot wounds and died on the spot. Cantt Police officials reached the scene immediately after the attack and cordoned off the area.

A search operation was launched in the surrounding streets to trace and arrest the attackers. Police said the assailants fled after the firing. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The body of the martyred constable was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Bannu for legal formalities and will later be handed over to the family.

Senior police officers are on site and an investigation is underway. Security in Bannu city and adjoining areas has been put on high alert following the incident.

Attacks targeting police personnel have increased in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent months, with law enforcement agencies conducting regular operations against militants in the region.
