The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued an alert that a powerful westerly wave has entered the north-western parts of the country, which will remain active in the upper and central regions till April 18.
Under this system, rain with thunderstorms and hailstorms are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Rain with strong winds and gusty winds is likely in most districts of Punjab, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Lahore, Sialkot, and Faisalabad on April 17 and 18. Heavy hailstorms have also been predicted at some places, which is likely to damage the ready wheat crops. Dusty winds and drizzle are expected in the districts of Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan in South Punjab.
Heavy rains are likely in Swat, Chitral, Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Galiyat on April 17 and 18. The NDMA has issued a warning that due to continuous rain, there is a risk of landslides in the hilly areas and flash flooding in local rivers, so tourists have been advised to avoid traveling to these areas.
Rain and strong winds are likely in the districts of Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, and Zhob of Balochistan during these two days. On the other hand, the weather will remain hot and humid in most parts of Sindh, including Karachi; however, dusty winds are expected in upper Sindh, which may affect visibility.
The authorities have advised the public to stay away from open places, electricity poles, and signboards during lightning and strong winds. Farmers have been urged to take immediate steps to protect their crops, and travelers have been urged to check the road conditions before starting their journey.
