ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed commitment to press freedom, asserting that a free media is indispensable for accountability, transparency, and the strengthening of a democratic society.

In their separate messages on World Press Freedom Day, both leaders paid tribute to journalists for their selfless service and emphasized that peace is impossible without truth.

President Zardari highlighted the growing challenges faced by the media fraternity, noting that journalists worldwide are increasingly subjected to harassment and pressure.

He expressed particular concern over the irresponsible use of social media platforms, which he said has led to the spread of disinformation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, extended tributes to columnists, reporters, editors, and broadcasters. He described impartial and unbiased reporting as the foundation of true journalism.

The Prime Minister stressed that it is the professional and social duty of every journalist to curb the transmission of propaganda and fake news.

Journalists deserve a dignified, safe, and conducive environment to perform their duties, PM stated. He framed the role of the media within Pakistan’s broader diplomatic efforts, noting that the country prioritizes dialogue to resolve tensions.

He concluded by stating that an informed society is only possible when journalism is practiced with integrity, acting as a bridge for regional peace and conflict resolution.
