SWAT: Winter has officially entered the Swat valley, with cold winds sweeping across the region as rain has been continuing intermittently in both plain and upper areas for the last two days, significantly dropping the temperature.
According to details, the plain areas including Mingora, Saidu Sharif, Barikot, Kabal and Matta are receiving light to moderate rainfall since yesterday, while the upper areas including Kalam, Malam Jabba, Bahrain, Madyan and Gabral are experiencing heavy rain.
The mountain peaks of Upper Swat, a famous high-altitude area in Upper Swat, received the first snowfall of this winter season last night. The mountains have been covered with a white blanket of snow, presenting a breathtaking view.
Residents said that after a long dry spell, the rain and snowfall have brought joy to farmers but also increased the cold. People have taken out warm clothes, quilts and heaters. With the first snowfall, tourists have started heading towards Kalam, Malam Jabba and Gabral. Hotel owners in Kalam said bookings have started for the weekend.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and snowfall in Swat and other parts of Malakand Division during the next 24 to 48 hours.
The department has also warned of landslides on link roads in upper Swat. Deputy Commissioner Swat has directed the district administration and PDMA teams to remain alert and ensure clearance of roads in case of landslides. Drivers have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to upper areas during heavy rain and snowfall.
