Regularly eating a variety of fruits may help support heart health by providing essential fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, according to research published in a medical journal.

While no single fruit can guarantee protection against heart disease, a balanced intake of different fruits may help maintain healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels and support blood vessel health.

Apple may help lower cholesterol and improve blood vessel function, while berries are rich in fibre and antioxidants that can help reduce levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol.

Avocado, despite commonly being considered vegetables, are fruits rich in unsaturated fats, fibre, potassium and magnesium, which may support healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Banana are a good source of potassium, which helps balance sodium levels in the body and may contribute to healthy blood pressure.

Pear contain plant compounds that may support blood vessel health, while grapes provide antioxidants that can help improve vascular function and maintain healthy blood pressure.

Kiwi are rich in vitamins C and E, potassium and antioxidants. Studies suggest that regular kiwi consumption may help improve cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of blood clots.

Other heart-friendly fruits highlighted in the research include oranges, pomegranates, cherries and papaya, which can also contribute valuable nutrients and antioxidants to a balanced diet.
