The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added 12 historical and cultural sites from Pakistan to its World Heritage Tentative List, highlighting the country’s rich and diverse heritage.
The newly added sites include four locations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chitral district, including the Kalash Valley, along with the historic Kot Diji, Naukot and Umerkot forts in Sindh.
Punjab’s Pherwala Fort, Rohtas Fort and the Tomb of Sultan Muqarrab Khan have also been included in the tentative list.
With the addition of the 12 new sites, the total number of Pakistani sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List has risen to 37.
Inclusion on the tentative list is an important preliminary step towards securing World Heritage status. It can help bring international attention to Pakistan’s diverse historical and cultural heritage.
The inclusion is also expected to support heritage conservation efforts, promote tourism and contribute to the development of local economies around these historic sites.
