WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said he is unconcerned by Iran’s decision to withdraw from an interim agreement signed between Washington and Tehran, reiterating that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a key objective of US policy.
In a brief telephone interview with US broadcaster NewsNation, Trump was asked about Tehran’s announcement that it would no longer abide by the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries last month.
“I couldn’t care less,” Trump said in response to Iran’s reported withdrawal from the agreement.
The US president again stressed that the primary goal remains ensuring that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons.
According to reports, the memorandum was signed in June as part of efforts to end hostilities between Washington and Tehran following a period of heightened tensions and military confrontation.
Meanwhile, Russian media outlets claimed that Trump had ordered the Pentagon to intensify military action against Iran following the reported deaths of two US soldiers in Jordan. However, no immediate confirmation of such an order was available from US officials.
