The Punjab government has decided to take strict action against smoke-emitting private vehicles, giving vehicle owners until October 15, 2026, to address the issue.
Punjab Transport Authority Secretary Hassan Ahsan announced that legal action would be taken without discrimination against all private vehicles found emitting excessive smoke from October 15.
Speaking at a press conference on measures to control smog, the transport secretary said the Transport Department, Environmental Protection Department and other relevant agencies were working together to tackle the issue through coordinated measures.
Hassan Ahsan said the measures taken last year had resulted in a noticeable improvement in the smog situation, while precautionary steps were also being taken this year.
He said the issuance of fitness certificates to commercial vehicles had increased by 18 per cent, while 24 million vehicles had so far been registered with the Excise Department.
The Transport Department will also issue special stickers for vehicles, which will remain valid for one year, he added.
The secretary further said traffic police would also be deployed in the field to assist enforcement agencies in taking action against vehicles emitting excessive smoke.
