WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei is directly participating in ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the conflict and expressed a desire to meet him.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump emphasized that Mojtaba Khamenei is part of the peace process. “He is certainly involved there is no doubt about that,” Trump said.
Trump believes Khamenei holds a lot of clout in Iran. Both the government and folks there look up to his decisions, according to Trump.
However, when it came to Khamenei’s health issues, Trump was more cautious. Why? Well, he’s never met the man and isn’t sure about what he can say on that front. Yet, he did jokingly refer to reports that suggest the leader has health problems impacting different areas of his body.
Looking ahead, Trump wants to potentially sit down with Khamenei and other key players once the deal-making moves forward. This comment arrives while both the U.S. and Iran sort out how they might end their tensions through discussions.
In an earlier interview, Trump stated that Iran had essentially agreed not to go for nuclear weapons. Still, the Iranians never officially confirmed it.
Mojtaba Khamenei took over as Iran’s Supreme Leader after his dad, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei passed away in March. Since then, he’s barely stepped into the public eye.
The Israeli airstrike in late February also wounded him. This same strike killed his father and other key military folks. Some even say he got bad leg injuries from it.
Trump to Iran: Now is the time to reach an agreement in some form
Earlier, US President Donald Trump has said that he has given a clear message to Iran that now is the time for the two countries to reach an agreement in some form or another.
In his latest statement, President Trump said that the behaviour that Iran has been following for the past 47 years cannot be allowed to continue. He said that in the current situation, a diplomatic solution and agreement are the best way forward.
Donald Trump also rejected the news about the stalled talks between the US and Iran. He said that, contrary to some reports, contacts and discussions between the two countries are continuing, and the process of negotiations has not stopped.
According to the US President, talks between Iran and the US are ongoing on various issues, but it is too early to say what the outcome of the talks will be. He added that at this time, no one can say with certainty which direction these talks will take or what kind of agreement they will end up with, but that contacts between the two sides are ongoing.
Trump’s statement comes at a time when various speculations have been going on in recent weeks regarding a possible agreement between the US and Iran, the nuclear program, regional tensions, and economic sanctions. The eyes of international observers are also focused on the ongoing diplomatic contacts between the two countries, as any possible development could have significant implications for the Middle East and global politics.
