WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said he believes an agreement with Iran could be reached within the coming week, expressing optimism over ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two countries.
In an interview with an American television network, Trump stated that negotiations with Iran have been taking place well and also hinted at the possibility of extending the existing cease-fire as part of a potential deal. It was also revealed that, in the case of a deal, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened for navigation.
Trump clarified that the occasional pause in talks with Iran should not be regarded as a harbinger of military actions by either side. “That doesn’t mean we are returning to military operations,” Trump emphasized.
Trump further said that the United States will keep up pressure on Iran until it accepts conditions that are favourable to the US. While calling this process tough, Trump has mentioned that there are active diplomatic channels too.
Trump has earlier expressed his belief that talks with Iran were happening at a rapid pace.
