ISLAMABAD: Consumers considering the purchase of used or second-hand iPhones have been advised to exercise caution, with experts highlighting several risks associated with pre-owned devices, including limited software support, hardware degradation and potential security concerns.
The Apple iPhone is known as one of the best-selling smartphones in the world, but its rather expensive price results in the fact that numerous people choose used devices because of cost savings. Although there is no denying that the use of pre-owned iPhones is more beneficial financially, consumers should take into account the risks of buying such smartphones.
Limited software updates can be considered as one of the major disadvantages of used iPhones. The older generation of iPhones becomes incompatible with the newest version of iOS over time, which prevents users from receiving all the advantages of the new operating system updates.
Another problem is associated with the hardware limitations of pre-owned devices. It has been mentioned above that used iPhones have decreased battery condition and processor performance. Also, some advanced features characteristic of the newest iPhones cannot be found in pre-owned devices.
Another issue worth mentioning is that most second-hand smartphones do not have any warranty coverage from Apple. Without warranty coverage from the company, consumers might have to pay for repairs in case of any malfunctions in the phone’s battery or screen, since the cost of purchasing spare parts is rather high.
Moreover, experts highlight several dangers associated with buying second-hand phones, which include counterfeit parts, theft, and technical malfunctions. Consumers need to check the serial number, iCloud lock, battery life, and overall performance of the phone.
Battery degradation remains one of the most common issues in used iPhones, often resulting in reduced performance and frequent charging requirements. In some cases, battery replacement may add additional cost to ownership.
Experts recommend that consumers with limited budgets consider purchasing relatively newer models rather than very old or unverified used devices, in order to benefit from longer software support, better performance and warranty coverage.
