The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert for the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the risk of glacial lake outburst floods resulting from rising temperatures and rainfall.
The alert states that a new wave of westerly winds will enter the province starting May 3, likely bringing heavy rains and storms to Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan. The department has warned of potential sudden flooding and flash floods in mountain rivers and streams as a result of melting glaciers combined with heavy rainfall, which could impact low-lying areas.
The PDMA cautions that the swift flow of water poses a risk of vehicles being swept away on connecting roads. Therefore, the public is advised to avoid unnecessary travel to hazardous areas.
All relevant district administrations have been directed to implement emergency measures and ensure that machinery and rescue personnel are available at sensitive locations. The PDMA has stressed the importance of maintaining an active early warning system to minimize the loss of life and property during any adverse situation.
