The Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert regarding a new heat wave across the country, warning that temperatures are likely to be much higher than normal in the months of May and June this year.
According to the alert, the areas of southern Punjab, upper Sindh and Balochistan may be the most affected, where the intense heat wave can have a profound impact on human health and daily life.
The Meteorological Department says that in the coming days, the temperature may reach 55 degrees Celsius in some places, while in the current days, the mercury is being recorded 2 to 4 degrees Celsius higher than normal in different parts of the country. A special possibility of an intense heat wave has been shown in the southern areas from April 29 to May 3.
On the other hand, the temperature is expected to decrease in the upper areas under the influence of westerly winds, and the mercury is likely to be 2 to 4 degrees lower than normal in these areas from April 29 to May 5.
On the other hand, the heat continues to be intense in the country’s major cities, with Lahore reaching 41 degrees Celsius, while Karachi is feeling as hot as 44 degrees Celsius due to excessive humidity despite the temperature being 38 degrees.
Health experts have strictly advised citizens to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun and drink plenty of water to avoid the risk of heatstroke. Children, the elderly and women in particular have been advised to take special precautions.
Meanwhile, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Umar Javed has issued instructions to all relevant institutions and rescue services to remain alert so that any emergency can be dealt with.
Farmers have also been advised to make proper arrangements for irrigation and maintenance of their crops, keeping in mind the severe weather.
