ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has issued a detailed notification regarding the legal status and registration of Afghan medical students studying in Pakistan, clarifying that the same laws and visa policies apply to all foreign students without discrimination.
According to the PMDC spokesperson, no specific restriction has been imposed on Afghan students or any particular nationality seeking medical education in Pakistan.
The council said more than 200 Afghan medical students had been identified across the country, of whom only 22 were formally and legally registered with the PMDC.
Of the 22 registered students, 14 have successfully completed their education, while the remaining eight are expected to graduate next year, according to the notification.
The PMDC said the educational records and documents of another 106 Afghan students were still under verification.
The council further clarified that obtaining a medical degree alone does not provide legal grounds for permanent residence or medical practice in Pakistan. A valid PMDC licence and a valid visa are mandatory for practising medicine in the country.
It added that unregistered students would not be recognised as legal students under Pakistan’s medical education system.
According to the PMDC, affected students are being provided full assistance to complete the required documentation in a timely manner and facilitate their dignified and orderly return.
The council also clarified that foreign students who fulfil all regulatory and legal requirements are welcome to pursue their studies in Pakistan.
