PESHAWAR: A meeting of the One-Man Commission on the constitutional and legal rights of the minority community, employment quota and educational opportunities was held in Peshawar, where officials revealed that 2,106 government posts reserved for minorities remain vacant in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting was chaired by One-Man Commission Chairman Dr Shoaib Suddle and attended by representatives of the minority community, administrative secretaries and police officials.
The participants reviewed the provision of constitutional and legal rights to minorities and the implementation of directives issued by the Supreme Court.
Dr Suddle said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had made considerable progress in ensuring constitutional and legal rights for the minority community. He also praised the province’s performance in implementing Supreme Court directives concerning minority rights.
The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the five per cent minority employment quota in government departments. Officials briefed the participants that 3,380 government posts had been allocated for minorities across the province, of which 1,282 eligible candidates had been recruited under the quota.
However, the meeting was informed that 2,106 posts reserved for the minority community were still vacant.
Dr Suddle directed the authorities to facilitate the timely recruitment of minority candidates against the vacant posts. He said that if candidates meeting the required qualifications were not available, additional options should be considered to ensure effective implementation of the minority employment quota.
The meeting also considered a proposal to establish a special academy for minority youth to enhance their skills and capacity. Dr Suddle said such an academy could help improve the capabilities of minority youth and enable them to benefit from government and other employment opportunities.
The implementation of the two per cent quota for minority students in public-sector universities was also reviewed. Officials said all public universities had assured the commission that they would ensure full implementation of the two per cent quota in upcoming admissions.
A briefing was also given on Gurdwara Sara Garhi Singh Sabha in Hangu. Officials said security had been provided to the gurdwara and further necessary measures would be taken after completion of its registration. Dr Suddle directed the relevant authorities to facilitate the registration process.
The meeting also decided to establish a special committee to oversee the appointments and transfers of minority employees. The committee will be headed by Dr Suddle and will formulate a clear policy and guidelines for the process.
