Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York on Monday to represent Pakistan at the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 25.
According to official briefing on the visit, the prime minister’s address is expected to highlight Pakistan’s position on regional and global security, peaceful resolution of conflicts, Palestine and Kashmir, climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia and global economic challenges. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, also said multilateral cooperation, climate change and the prevailing global situation would feature in the prime minister’s engagements.
The 81st UN General Assembly’s high-level general debate is being held from Sept 22 to 26, with an additional sitting scheduled for Sept 28. This year’s session is taking place under the theme Restoring trust, managing transformation, A United Nations that delivers for all.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi are accompanying Prime Minister Shehbaz as part of the Pakistani delegation.
The prime minister is also expected to hold a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, with discussions focusing on regional developments, international cooperation and issues of importance to Pakistan.
