BISHKEK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday.
The two leaders held discussions in a warm and friendly atmosphere, reaffirming the close and longstanding ties between Pakistan and Iran and stressing the importance of further strengthening bilateral relations across all areas of mutual interest.
They also emphasised the need to implement decisions reached during President Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan in June this year.
The meeting also covered ongoing efforts to enhance regional connectivity and promote greater people-to-people contacts between the two countries. The leaders exchanged views on recent developments in the regional situation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to continuing sincere efforts aimed at promoting peace in the region.
He expressed hope that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to Tehran and his constructive engagements would contribute to positive outcomes.
The prime minister stressed the importance of restraint, tolerance and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
He also underscored the need to advance the understanding reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), describing continued diplomatic engagement as the viable way forward for achieving durable regional peace.
President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s continued diplomatic efforts for regional peace and security.
The Iranian president highlighted the enduring strength of Pakistan-Iran relations, saying the ties between the two countries were rooted in centuries-old shared history, culture and religion.
Pezeshkian reiterated Tehran’s desire to expand cooperation with Pakistan across various sectors.
He also stressed the importance of promoting unity and solidarity among Muslim countries to address contemporary challenges facing the Muslim world.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited President Pezeshkian to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at a mutually convenient date.
The Iranian president, in turn, invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend the upcoming Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit, scheduled to be held in Tehran in December 2026.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials were also present.
