PESHAWAR: A major development has emerged in the high-profile attack on a police team near Peshawar’s Northern Bypass, with sources claiming that proclaimed offender Mumtaz alias Mumtazay has died from his injuries.
However, police authorities have not yet officially confirmed the reported death.
The incident took place near Northern Bypass within the jurisdiction of Shahpur Police Station when a police team was transporting the wanted suspect, Mumtaz alias Mumtazay, after taking him into custody.
According to sources, armed men lying in ambush opened heavy fire on the police party and also attacked the officers with hand grenades.
Two station house officers (SHOs) sustained serious injuries in the attack, while Mumtaz, who was in police custody, was also critically wounded after being caught in the gunfire.
Police responded immediately, killing two of the attackers at the scene. The injured officers, along with the suspect and the bodies of the deceased attackers, were shifted to a hospital for medical treatment and legal formalities.
Sources claimed that Mumtaz remained in critical condition while receiving treatment at the hospital before succumbing to his injuries. The claim has yet to be officially verified by police authorities.
CCPO Peshawar said security had been tightened around the Northern Bypass and adjoining areas. Police are also searching for other individuals and possible facilitators allegedly linked to the attack.
