PESHAWAR: Investigations are ongoing into the assassination of Sheikh Muhammad Idrees Tarangzai, a prominent religious scholar, former provincial assembly member and Sheikh al-Hadith, in Charsadda.
According to the investigative team, the attack was carried out using a 9mm pistol, and four individuals were involved in the incident. Two of the suspects conducted reconnaissance, while the other two provided logistical support.
The attack occurred near the graveyard along a 2-km road from the house of Sheikh Idrees to the madrassa where he had gone to deliver a lecture on Hadith. Evidence has been collected, and the lead shooter has been identified.
During the attack, two police officials also got injured. An inquiry commission consisting of three members has been constituted to investigate the murder that attracted criticism across the country.
The political and religious community condemned the killing and said that Sheikh Idrees suffered martyrdom for speaking against the blasphemy of Islam and Pakistan.
The investigating team has secured some photographs and other information about the group behind this crime.
IS Khurasan claims responsibility for assassination of religious leader Sheikh Idrees
Earlier, the Islamic State (IS) Khurasan has claimed responsibility for the assassination of religious leader Sheikh Idrees, who was targeted in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda on Tuesday morning.
The IS Khurasan group claimed responsibility on its website for the assassination of a pro-government Pakistani cleric and former provincial assembly member, Muhammad Idris, near the Afghan border.
The IS Khurasan stated that their soldiers assassinated a pro-government Pakistani cleric and former member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly, and the supreme religious authority of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) party, Muhammad Idrees, by targeting his car with gunfire in the village of Utmanzai in the Charsadda district. Two police officers assigned to guard him were also wounded.
