Germany Opportunity Card: How Pakistanis Can Move to Germany Without a Job Offer

ISLAMABAD: Germany has introduced the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), providing qualified and skilled workers from non-EU countries, including Pakistan, with a legal pathway to enter Germany and look for employment without having a job offer in advance.

The Opportunity Card allows eligible applicants to travel to Germany for up to one year to search for a suitable job.

Who Can Apply for the Opportunity Card?

Individuals who have acquired a recognised university degree or vocational training in Germany may also fall within the scope of skilled workers and apply for the Opportunity Card.

Individuals who have foreign credentials that are not recognised in Germany may also be eligible via a points system.

In general, individuals require at least a two-year recognised vocational training or a university degree, German language proficiency of A1 level or English language skills of B2 level, and at least six points.

Points will be assigned based on various criteria such as age, educational and professional qualifications, work experience, German and English language proficiency, and prior legal residence in Germany.

Individuals below 35 years of age will be granted two points, while those from 35 to 40 years of age will be granted one point.

Financial Requirement in 2026

Applicants for the Opportunity Card must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves in Germany.

In 2026, applicants are required to prove net financial resources of at least €1,091 per month. This requirement can generally be met through a blocked bank account, a declaration of commitment from an eligible sponsor, or, in certain cases, a confirmed part-time job.

What Can Opportunity Card Holders Do in Germany?

Once in Germany, Opportunity Card holders can work up to 20 hours per week in part-time employment.

They may also undertake a trial period of up to two weeks with a potential employer, allowing them to explore employment, apprenticeship or qualification opportunities.

However, obtaining a job does not automatically convert the Opportunity Card into a work permit. Before the card expires, the holder must apply for an appropriate residence title.

Depending on their circumstances, available options may include a skilled-worker residence permit or an EU Blue Card, among other residence pathways.

Applicants Advised to Beware of Fraud

Authorities have advised applicants to verify their educational and professional qualifications through the relevant German institutions and submit all required documentation and proof of financial resources during the application process.

Officials have also warned that the Opportunity Card does not provide free accommodation, guaranteed employment or automatic government financial assistance.

Applicants have been urged to remain cautious of fake job offers, unverified blocked-account services and unauthorised agents promising quick visas or guaranteed approval.

The Opportunity Card is intended to provide qualified international workers with a legal route to enter Germany and search for suitable employment based on their skills and qualifications.
