ISLAMABAD: To give relief to transport service providers to cope with increased operating costs, authorities concerned on Sunday approved an increase in public transport fares.

This decision has been taken following hike in petroleum products and that’s why the Islamabad Regional Transport Authority (RTA) approved a temporary increase in public transport fares. In this connection, diesel-powered vehicles to raise fares by 8 percent and petrol-powered vehicles by 3 percent and this decision was taken during a meeting between the Secretary of the Islamabad Regional Transport Authority and representatives of transport operators.

Officials said the temporary adjustment was intended to help transport providers cope with increased operating costs resulting from higher fuel prices. Under the revised arrangement, operators of diesel-powered public transport services have been authorised to increase base fares by up to 8 percent, while operators of petrol-powered vehicles may raise base fares by up to 3 percent.

Participants also agreed that no further fare increase would be considered during the next seven days unless petroleum prices rise by more than 5 per cent. It is worth mentioning that in the wake of ongoing tension in the Middle East, day-to-day changes in oil prices have badly affected certain sectors.
