PESHAWAR: Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has openly opposed the proposed changes and reforms to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act, expressing serious concerns over the amendments.
Speaking during a private television programme, Gandapur said the fundamental purpose of granting administrative and financial powers to the Inspector General of Police, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was to empower and strengthen the police force.
He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had always aimed to strengthen institutions rather than individuals.

“Our manifesto was never about controlling the police on political grounds or bringing it under our control,” Gandapur said, adding that the party wanted an independent and non-political police force capable of operating without political pressure.
Gandapur expressed concern that the party was forgetting its original manifesto and objectives and was now moving in the wrong direction toward confrontation.
He maintained that empowering the police and keeping it free from political influence had been a fundamental part of PTI’s policy, adding that the proposed changes represented a departure from that position.
