PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an alert for upper districts of the province over the potential risk of increased glacier melting.
According to the authority, rising temperatures and intermittent rainfall expected from August 31 to September 4 could accelerate glacier melting, increasing the volume and water levels of glacial lakes.
The PDMA warned that the situation could increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), potentially triggering sudden flooding and rapid water flows in vulnerable areas.
The authority has alerted the administrations of Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Mansehra to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
The administrations have also been directed to conduct evacuation drills at vulnerable locations and ensure that safe places are identified and kept ready to accommodate residents in case of an emergency.
