ISLAMABAD: Consumers will now have faulty electricity meters replaced within one month, following a major reduction in the replacement timeline announced by the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) as part of the government’s ongoing power sector reforms.
According to the Power Division, the reforms introduced by the Ministry of Energy are beginning to deliver tangible results, with GEPCO achieving significant improvements in operational and financial performance.
The spokesperson said GEPCO has become the country’s second power distribution company, after Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), to bring its transmission and distribution losses into the single-digit range.
During the fiscal year 2025-26, Gepco reduced its line losses from 10.43pc to a historic low of 9.80pc through improved operational strategies. The company also increased its bill recovery rate to more than 100pc.
The Power Division said GEPCO maintained a zero contribution to the circular debt owing to improved financial discipline. Under the nationwide anti-power theft campaign, the company saved the national exchequer Rs5.2 billion over the past year through strict enforcement measures.
As part of efforts to improve consumer services, the time required to replace faulty electricity meters has been reduced to just one month.
Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari said the government’s continuous, data-driven monitoring of power distribution companies was producing encouraging results.
He said the performance of all distribution companies was being regularly reviewed, adding that there would be no compromise on achieving line loss and recovery targets.
The minister added that the complete digitalization of billing and recovery remains a key component of the government’s power sector reform agenda and is expected to further enhance transparency and efficiency across the system.
