ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has been placed on high alert until Sept 30, 2026, in view of the prevailing situation, according to a circular issued by the hospital administration.
The administration has directed the hospital to ensure round-the-clock availability of ambulances and essential staff throughout the high-alert period. Director Emergency Dr Shirjeel Zaheer has been designated as the focal person for dealing with any emergency situation.
Heads of all clinical and non-clinical departments have been instructed to remain available at their stations, while duty rosters are to be kept updated to ensure the availability of essential staff 24 hours a day.
The emergency department, intensive care units (ICUs), operation theatres, trauma services, nursing and diagnostic facilities have been ordered to remain fully operational. The blood bank and pharmacy services must also remain fully functional.
The administration has directed officials to ensure the availability of additional beds, stretchers and wheelchairs in case of a large influx of patients. Adequate stocks of oxygen, blood, medicines, essential medical equipment and other supplies have also been ordered.
Emergency and ambulance routes within the hospital are to remain clear at all times, while security has been tightened at the emergency department, main entrances and other sensitive areas.
All officers and staff have been directed to remain immediately available and respond promptly in the event of an emergency. During the high-alert period, all staff leave has been restricted except for medical leave.
The administration has also instructed that maximum available staff from neurosurgery, orthopaedics, general surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery be kept on call.
In addition, 20 designated beds have been ordered to remain available in PIMS’ SW-4 ward as part of the hospital’s emergency preparedness measures.
