ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that Pakistan’s current system has failed and that major administrative reforms, including the creation of new administrative units or provinces, are necessary to address the country’s longstanding challenges.
Addressing the first Pakistan Economic Summit, Naqvi said that unless the foundations of the system were corrected within democratic limits, the country’s situation would not improve and existing problems would continue.
“I try not to make political speeches, but today I have to say a few political things,” Naqvi said during his address.
He said representatives from Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had highlighted their respective issues, adding that all stakeholders present were responsible for the country’s current situation.
The interior minister said that despite being in politics for around three and a half years, he believed the same problems would continue to be discussed even after a decade unless fundamental changes were introduced.
“The system we are living in has collapsed,” Naqvi said, adding that once a decision was made to fix the system, improvements could be achieved.
Expressing support for democracy, Naqvi said there were different forms of democratic systems and stressed that ordinary citizens needed access to basic facilities, which he acknowledged were currently difficult to provide.
He called for reforms at the administrative unit level, saying such units could be called provinces or given any other name, but changes were needed to improve governance.
Naqvi also criticized short-term approaches to addressing youth issues, saying that distributing small financial assistance or devices such as tablets would not solve deeper challenges. He emphasized that fundamental structural issues needed to be addressed to bring lasting improvement.
