SWAT (Naveed Shahzad): The Swat District Administration and local police have launched a crackdown against individuals involved in harassing tourists and obstructing their movement in the Kalam valley.
The intervention follows reports of a group of people attempting to block tourist vehicles and create an atmosphere of fear, leading to the registration of a formal case under relevant legal provisions. According to Saeed-ur-Rehman, spokesperson for the Upper Swat Development Authority (USDA), the provincial government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands or interfere with the freedom of travellers.
Authorities have officially clarified that there are no restrictions on travel to Kalam, Mahodand, or the surrounding scenic spots. Visitors are permitted to use their own private vehicles or hire local drivers as they see fit, and no individual or unauthorised group has the legal right to impose conditions on their movement.
The USDA said that such disruptive incidents threaten the regional tourism industry, and immediate administrative and legal action will be taken to ensure that the area remains a safe and welcoming destination for all.
To prevent future occurrences, the USDA, in coordination with the Swat District Police and the District Administration, is currently developing a comprehensive set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). These regulations are being formulated in consultation with local stakeholders to streamline tourism management and provide a more secure environment. Travellers who encounter any difficulties or illegal checkpoints are encouraged to immediately report the matter to the police or the development authority for swift assistance.
