KURRAM: Security forces have foiled an alleged infiltration attempt by militants affiliated with Fitna al-Khawarij in the Kurram sector, reportedly being carried out under the supervision of the Afghan Taliban, according to security sources.
Following the failed infiltration attempt, Afghan Taliban forces allegedly opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts in the Kurram sector, prompting a response from Pakistan’s security forces.
Security sources said the infiltration attempt was launched from Afghan Taliban positions in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces. They said Pakistani troops deployed along the border responded effectively to the attempted incursion.
According to the sources, Afghan Taliban forces targeted Pakistani border posts with heavy weapons, mortars and other arms.
Pakistani security forces subsequently carried out retaliatory strikes, targeting several Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive positions with small arms, heavy weapons and artillery, the sources said.
The security forces claimed that they maintained control of the border areas and responded to the reported firing.
The sources further claimed that, following the intense exchange of fire, Afghan Taliban personnel abandoned several positions and withdrew from the area.
The security situation along the border is being closely monitored, the sources said, adding that Pakistani forces remain on alert and prepared to respond to any further provocation.
