ISLAMABAD: Skywatchers across Pakistan and around the world are set to witness the year’s first Blue Moon on Sunday, May 31, in a rare celestial event that has generated excitement among astronomy enthusiasts.
According to astronomers, the phenomenon is considered unusual because a Blue Moon refers to the second full moon occurring within the same calendar month.
The first full moon of May, known as the Flower Moon, appeared on May 1, while the second full moon will be visible on the last day of the month.
Experts have clarified that despite its name, the moon will not appear blue. Instead, it will retain its usual golden and silver appearance while shining brightly in the night sky.
This year’s Blue Moon is also being described as a “Micromoon” because it will occur when the moon is near its farthest point from Earth, making it appear slightly smaller than usual.
In Pakistan, the celestial event is expected to be visible on Sunday evening shortly after sunset on the eastern horizon, where the full moon can be observed clearly with the naked eye.
Blue Moons are relatively rare and generally occur once every two to three years, making the event a special attraction for photographers and astronomy enthusiasts eager to capture the spectacle.
