PESHAWAR: The district administration has placed Peshawar on high alert to maintain peace and order on the occasion of 10th Muharram.
Thousands of mourners will participate in the main processions of Ashura across the city. Police, elite force and other law enforcement agencies are deployed along all the traditional routes of the processions.
Security has been tightened around Imam Bargah Hussainia Hall Sadar and Imam Bargah Bibi Sahiba Ganj. Snipers have been deployed on the roofs of buildings, walk-through gates and metal detectors have been installed at entrances. All the processions are being monitored from the Central Control Room. Bomb disposal squad completed sweeping of all roads before procession.
The traffic police have released a detailed plan of alternative routes. All markets and bazaars of the President will remain closed during the procession. The main procession will start from Zul-Jinnah Imambargah, Hussainia Hall, pass through GPO Chowk, Kalibari and Fawara Chowk and end at Imambargah. The second large procession will leave Imam Bargah Bibi Sahiba Ganj at 4:00 pm. Citizens have been directed to use Khyber Road, University Road and Ring Road to avoid congestion in the red zone.
Rescue 1122, medical camp and fire brigade personnel have been kept on standby along the procession routes. Mourners will offer noon prayers at Kalibari. juices, milk and water have been set up for the participants.
Commissioner Peshawar has appealed to citizens to cooperate with security personnel, keep mobile phones charged and report any suspicious activity immediately. He said that videos or rumors should not be shared on social media without confirmation during the days of Muharram.
