ISLAMABAD: The federal government has tightened regulations against government officials who acquire or conceal foreign citizenship while serving abroad, with officials who fail to renounce foreign nationality or conceal it now facing dismissal from service.
According to a notification issued by the federal government, a government employee holding foreign citizenship or a permanent residency card will be dismissed if they fail to surrender it within the prescribed period or conceal the status from their department.
Following directions from the Senate Standing Committee, the Establishment Division has also ordered the compilation of data and records of all senior government officers from BS-17 to BS-22 to facilitate the identification of officials holding dual nationality.
Meanwhile, a bill seeking to impose a complete ban on dual citizenship for bureaucrats has also been submitted to the National Assembly Secretariat. The proposed legislation aims to ensure that individuals holding key government positions have their allegiance exclusively to Pakistan.
Reports previously presented by the government in the National Assembly have identified several senior officials holding citizenship or permanent residency status, including Canadian and British citizenship or green cards from other countries.
The latest measures are aimed at strengthening scrutiny of foreign citizenship and residency among senior government officials and ensuring compliance with the applicable service rules.
