KARACHI: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), announced a nationwide protest against inflation, declaring that “decisions are no longer made in parliament but in the streets.” The demonstrations are scheduled to take place on May 22 across all district headquarters.
Addressing the Wahdat-e-Ummat conference held in Karachi, Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed regret that Pakistan had failed to maintain the cohesion of its nation and blamed its government for poor management of its economy. He explained that Muslims have suffered oppression all across the world due to the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, oppression of Palestinians in Gaza and Libya.
He warned that developments taking place in neighboring regions, like the occupation of Iran by Israel, could pose threats to Pakistan, and called for solidarity of Arab countries to ensure the security of the Muslim Ummah.
While stressing the commitment of his political party to constitutionalism and democracy, he assured that his political party does not subscribe to any ideological system that promotes enmity, but rather promotes unity and love. He criticized the government of Pakistan for its policies in foreign relations, protection of borders, privatization of institutions, and high rate of inflation, explaining that fuel prices in Pakistan were higher than in Bangladesh.
Furthermore, he condemned lawlessness in Sindh and called for better governance, provision of jobs, better educational facilities, and curbing inflation.
He added that JUI-F is going ahead with its protest movement of May 22, which was initially postponed because of the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran; a big rally is arranged in Pishin on June 4.
