KOHAT: Illegal gold mining continues unabated in the Khushhal Garh and Shakardara areas of Kohat despite the enforcement of Section 144, raising serious concerns over law enforcement, public safety, and the effectiveness of administrative measures.
According to local sources, although the district administration imposed Section 144 to curb unauthorized mining activities, authorities have so far failed to ensure its effective implementation. The continued extraction of gold has prompted questions about the government’s ability to enforce the restrictions.
The issue gained further attention after an audio message, allegedly shared by the District Police Officer (DPO) of Kohat on social media a few days ago, suggested that the police no longer have a role in stopping the illegal mining operations.
Residents of the affected areas claim that the illegal gold mining network enjoys protection from influential individuals.
Some locals have alleged that certain officials within the district administration and police are either involved in or facilitating the unlawful activities.
However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and no official evidence has been presented to substantiate the claims.
Meanwhile, local sources say that one or two bodies are frequently recovered from the Shakardara and Khushhal Garh areas.
While some residents and local sources believe these incidents may be linked to disputes surrounding the illegal gold mining operations, authorities have not officially confirmed any connection.
Reports from the area also indicate that two armed groups are engaged in an ongoing conflict over control of the gold-rich sites.
According to local accounts, armed clashes occur regularly as rival groups compete for dominance over the mining locations.
These confrontations have reportedly resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities, further heightening security concerns in the region.
The situation has sparked growing concern among residents, who are urging the authorities to take decisive action to enforce the law, dismantle illegal mining operations, and restore peace and order in the affected areas.
