PESHAWAR: Motorists travelling on the Hazara Motorway will now have to be more careful, as a new e-challan system has become operational following the installation of traffic monitoring cameras.

Under the system, cameras will identify vehicles involved in traffic violations, while motorists with outstanding e-challans will be required to clear their fines at motorway interchanges before they can leave. According to SP Maqsood Dogar, the automated system will identify vehicles carrying e-challans as they approach an interchange.

A designated indicator will alert motorway police officials about the vehicle and the outstanding violation.
Officials will then check the e-challan and collect the fine at the interchange. The vehicle will be allowed to exit the motorway after the payment is made. SP Dogar said the system was introduced to improve monitoring of traffic violations, strengthen enforcement of motorway laws and encourage motorists to follow traffic regulations.

The introduction of the e-challan system is another step towards automated traffic enforcement in Pakistan. Camera-based monitoring allows authorities to keep a closer watch on busy roads, record violations digitally and reduce reliance on roadside checks.

The technology could also help improve road safety by detecting violations such as speeding and dangerous driving. At the same time, accurate vehicle identification, clear evidence and transparent procedures will be important to ensure that motorists can challenge any incorrect penalties.

The move reflects Pakistan’s growing shift towards smart traffic management, with cameras, digital records and automated enforcement increasingly becoming part of the country’s road network.
