GILGIT: The Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly have been elected unopposed, marking a smooth transition in the newly constituted provincial legislature.
Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Assembly, while Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman secured the position of Deputy Speaker without contest.
The oath of office was administered by the outgoing Speaker Nazir Advocate to the new Speaker Imran Nadeem, who then administered the oath of office to the Deputy Speaker, Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has made the nominations of its candidate for the post of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Sources say that Advocate Amjad Hussain is the nominee of PPP for the chief executive post of the region. Chairman of PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reportedly approved the nomination.
Through a telephone call with the PPP Gilgit-Baltistan President Amjad Hussain, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has given some instructions for the government formation and constitutional and economic rights of the people of the region.
Sources claim that PPP has also held consultations with different stakeholders from political fronts to gain their support against nomination in the chief ministerial post.
An assembly session has been summoned for tomorrow at 4:00 PM, where key procedural matters are expected to move forward.
Party insiders suggest that the announcement of the Chief Minister and other key positions is likely to be made following the assembly’s oath-taking process, with final decisions to be taken by the party leadership.
There are also indications that the PPP is moving towards forming a coalition government in Gilgit-Baltistan, with reports suggesting that the Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party may become part of the governing alliance.
Further political announcements are expected after the conclusion of ongoing consultations.
