LONDON: Andy Burnham has become the United Kingdom’s new prime minister after being formally invited to form a government by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.
According to British media reports, Burnham met King Charles following the resignation of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The King accepted Starmer’s resignation, officially bringing his tenure to an end before inviting Burnham to take office as the country’s new premier.
Burnham was recently elected leader of the governing Labour Party, succeeding Starmer. His appointment marks the culmination of a political career spanning several decades.
Burnham is an important personality in the Labour Party having previously held the office of Mayor of Greater Manchester and several high-level posts in politics. He participated in the race for Labour leadership twice, in 2010 and 2015 where he lost the race to Jeremy Corbyn, coming in second place.
Despite having been back in Parliament for less than a month, his appointment as Prime Minister is informed by many years of political experience both at the national and regional level.
As Prime Minister, it is expected that Burnham will concentrate on the government’s economic policy and public services development, as well as improving Labour’s standing for upcoming political battles.
His appointment as leader and Prime Minister is the result of the end of the process of selecting a new party leader and candidate for Prime Minister within the Labour Party.
